Ben Hope (Beinn Hòb) is the most northerly Munro in Scotland. Its Gaelic name translates as “Mountain of the Bay”, a nod to its position above the sweeping waters of Loch Hope and the coastal inlets beyond.

Rising sharply from Strath More, Ben Hope commands vast views across the Flow Country, the Pentland Firth, and—on a clear day—even the distant isles of Orkney. Its isolation lends it a distinct character: a sentinel of the far north, watching over where land meets sea.

Highland tradition holds Ben Hope as a guardian of the bay, protecting travellers who crossed the waters below. Some tales speak of gentle spirits dwelling in its corries, guiding hunters and wanderers safely home. Its name captures this dual nature—both a landmark of the landscape and a mythic presence bound to the sea it overlooks.

Wee Rosie's Hope

By David Clark

Up Ben Hope one autumn day,
When stags roared wild across the way,
Rosie trotted, bright and keen,
Ears alert to every scene.

We followed streams through silver spray,
Past waterfall’s relentless play,
Her paws dancing light on moss and stone,
My faithful shadow, not alone.

Higher still through rocks we leap,
Where cliffs rose stark and slopes grew steep,
She reached the trig, stood proud and free,
A perfect moment for her and me.

I hold that day with Rosie dear,
Her happy trot, her listening ear.
At the summit she stood beside my knee,
A simple moment, now memory.
