Route Description
Embark on a breathtaking hike along the Meall nan Tarmachan Ridge, a jewel nestled in the Ben Lawers Range of the southern Scottish Highlands. Your adventure begins at the Lawers car park, a gateway to an unforgettable experience that promises awe-inspiring scenery, a tapestry of gentle inclines and daring but avoidable scrambles, culminating in the thrilling passage across one of Scotland’s most esteemed hill walks. The journey is centred around the majestic Meall nan Tarmachan, lying to the west and isolated from the other Lawers Munros, standing tall at 1,044 meters, a Munro that anchors the route, inviting explorers to walk along the well-defined path and discover the numerous peaks that adorn the ridge.
From Lawers Car Park
Your hike sets off from the Lawers car park, conveniently located just north off the A827, which traces the northern edge of Loch Tay. The hikers route greets you with a gentle rise, ushering you along a distinct path that swiftly opens to the vastness of the hillside. As you ascend, the breathtaking panorama of Loch Tay unfurls behind you, with the grandeur of the encompassing mountains as your backdrop.
The initial leg of the hike then presents a steep ascent toward the lofty Meall nan Tarmachan. The path here is clear and meticulously kept by the Rangers from the National Trust for Scotland, who own and take care of the land. The path they maintain certainly offers a pleasant and straightforward beginning to this Munro bagging experience.
Meall nan Tarmachan (1,044 m)
Ascending with anticipation, with the last push up the steep path, you will suddenly arrive at the summit of Meall nan Tarmachan, the solitary Munro along this ridge. At an impressive elevation of 1,044 meters, it affords magnificent views that sweep across the Ben Lawers range, reaching out over Loch Tay to the south, and extending into the heart of the Highlands to the north and west. The summit, marked by a small cairn, provides a perfect respite to revel in the expansive views before you venture forth onto the ridge’s more thrilling segments.
Tarmachan Ridge Traverse
With the summit of Meall nan Tarmachan behind you, the path ahead transforms, presenting a more airy and engaging experience as you commence the celebrated Tarmachan Ridge traverse. This portion of the walk is the crescendo of the journey, showcasing slender crests, jagged formations, and optional scrambles for the bold-hearted. The path flows gently around the tops and bealachs, twists and turns around the hill, this is a fine walking route, as good as you’ll find on any hill, anywhere! Traverse Meall Garbh, Beinn nan Eachan then past the Great Gully onto Creag na Caillich, still following the path, dropping down west then east through a rather wet grassy region, finally following the dirt road back to the Lawers car park. A great way to spend a day in the hills.
