Guardians of Glen Shiel: Càrn Ghluasaid, Sgùrr nan Conbhairean & Sàil Chaorainn
High above Glen Shiel, three Munros stand like sentinels, each carrying a name rich with Gaelic meaning and echoes of Highland lore:
Càrn Ghluasaid – “Hill of Movement” Legends tell of restless stones that shift upon its slopes, as if guided by unseen hands. Climbers often sense a strange vitality here, a mountain alive with motion and memory.
Sgùrr nan Conbhairean – “Peak of the Keeper” The highest of the trio, this summit recalls the guardians of hounds and hunters. Folklore speaks of spectral keepers roaming the ridges, their watchful presence felt in the silence of the high corries.
Sàil Chaorainn – “Rounded Hill of the Rowan Tree” The rowan tree, sacred in Celtic tradition, was believed to ward off evil. This ridge embodies that protective spirit, offering safe passage to those who respect the land’s ancient powers.
Together, these peaks form a corrie walk that is more than a physical journey. It is a passage through myth and landscape, where Gaelic names preserve fragments of cultural memory, and every summit carries the weight of story. To traverse them is to step into Scotland’s living folklore, where stone, spirit, and sky intertwine.
Folklore Note: Gaelic mountain names often describe not just the land’s shape but its spirit. Here, movement, guardianship, and protection weave together into a narrative of Glen Shiel as a place of both challenge and sanctuary.
